Land at Hua Hin, Thailand, where Alan will build his retirement house. Alan is having the level of his land raised with back-fill soil to put the house above the flood level.
I have advised Alan to take care to make sure the foundations for his house are designed properly. Back-filled land like this will have no load bearing capacity and the foundations must go down through the back fill to a layer of strong sub-soil. Piled foundations may be necessary.
I strongly recommend to anyone building a house in Thailand that they have a site soil investigation carried out for the reasons explained on the “Site Testing Of The Soil For House Foundation Design” page.
Flooding Of The Access Road To The Hua Hin House Build Project
Alan sent the pictures below showing how the access road to his land floods in the rainy season. It also demonstrates a problem that we also have with our own retirement land in Pakchong; the rapid growth of vegetation that can quickly overwhelm roads and building plots alike.
