Pakchong Cowboy City Countdown 2011 – Happy New Year 1
For the benefit of those readers who don’t know what the “Pakchong Cowboy City Countdown Festival” is it’s when Pakchong (Pak Chong) is turned into a Cowboy City for the week leading up to the New Year with actual Thai Cowboys, Indians, country and western music, rock music, the compulsory Thai food and beer sellers and a firework show beginning at midnight on 31st December 2010.
The festival is held at the Khao Khaen park on Mitraphap Road in Pakchong. The huge stage for the performers and bands features a Countdown Clock that counts down the time to the New Year 2011.

The countdown to happy new year 2011 had commenced a week earlier when the cowboy city fiesta kicked off and the whole vicinity of Pakchong (Pak Chong) Cowboy City was taken over by the rock-band and country and western music stage, the food vendors and crowds of Thais and westerners each night truly delighted to be getting ready to wish themselves and everyone else a happy new year (Sawat Dee Be Mai) merriment.
I had arrived in Thailand in December 2010 to decide on the selection of a builder to build our retirement house in Pakchong not to watch the happy new year firework spectacle in Pakchong (Pak Chong). But the whole week’s event of live music every night, rock music and country and western music, the spicy Thai food from the food sellers, and the closing firework extravaganza had such a delighful impact on me that I am definitely flying to Pakchong in a year’s time to watch it all over another time.
However the firework extravaganza itself was amazing and I will never forget the gasps of delight and astonishment from the crowd of happy new year revellers as the fireworks exploded in the sky generating vast umbrellas of coloured stars slowly falling down to earth. It was like seeing shoals of gigantic brightly coloured jelly-fish descend from the sky like some alien star-wars attack. The stars fell from the sky in gentle arcs and appeared to drop so low that one could visualize reaching up and being able to touch them.
It was a sight and sound of awe for all the Thai people collected there to watch the impressive occasion.
